Three Big Boxes?

Yes, this year, we're going big and actually moved up to planting *three* square-foot garden boxes. Whoa! We've got everything we could get our hands on, including zucchini, chard, bok choy, three varieties of tomatoes, broccoli, squash, watermelon, cucumbers and a boatload of flowers. Soaker hoses have been placed over the cover mulch, we're fertilized and ready for more of that hot, sunny weather. Bring it on!  Remember - share your planting with a kid and grow something together.

Killing Frost

Here in New England, two Spring frosts in late April and early May have dampened my ambitions for getting the crops planted early. I'm already down a few tomatoes, peppers and some assorted flowers in the square-foot garden bed. So much for pushing my luck with mother nature. But on the positive side, the lettuce, onions, broccoli, are just exploding. It is good to get the planting going with my daughter – kids really like square-foot gardens. Get out and get planting...if you dare!

Square Foot Garden Results

The good news is that the rainy spring in New England is giving my square foot garden an excellent start.  The bad news is that the cold weather crops are literally taking over - the broccoli wins.  There is a nice mix of lettuce, beans, peas, tomatoes, onions and flowers.  I would recommend you give a square foot garden a try.  I'm not sure if I'll ever go back to row planting.  The grid system makes it much easier to visualize and manage crop rotations and it is nearly weed-free.  Kids love the smaller size too - easier to water and take care of.  Next plantings are cucumbers and squash and depending on your organic preferences, don't be shy with the miracle-gro.
